Code of Conduct
MGRU CODE OF CONDUCT
MGRU is predicated on a feminist ethics of care, meaning that we uphold a commitment to respect others’ boundaries and privacy. Our ethics of care is an organisation-wide endeavour that requires everyone to behave in an appropriate and respectful manner. To that end, this Code of Conduct outlines the expected behaviours within MGRU.
- ADHERENCE TO MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY STUDENT CHARTER – All members are expected to adhere to the Macquarie University Student Charter (Student Code of Conduct).
- RESPECT – Respect people’s physical and emotional boundaries. Respect the diversity of backgrounds, genders, sexualities, cultures, and experience of our members and the wider Macquarie University community.
- ZERO-TOLERANCE TO ASSAULT – Physical or sexual assault is against the law and will not be tolerated.
- SAFE AND HARASSMENT-FREE ZONE – Sexual or other types of harassment will not be tolerated at any time. Sexual harassment is unwelcome sexual behaviour, which could be expected to make a person feel offended, humiliated or intimidated. Sexual harassment can be physical, verbal or written. The behaviour does not have to be repeated to be harassment.
- INCLUSIVE SPACE – MGRU is an explicitly safe environment for all persons, especially minorities, such as people who are; LGBTQ+, racialised, disabled, and religious. Harassing behaviour which makes minority people feel offended, humiliated or intimidated will not be tolerated at any time. The behaviour does not have to be repeated to be harassment. Claims to “Academic Freedom” do not absolve individuals from instances of hate speech or harassment.
- CONFIDENTIALITY – Many topics that are brought to MGRU meetings are confidential and should not be disclosed without prior consent of all parties. Always err on the side of maintaining confidentiality, and never assume someone knows about an issue.
- PRACTICE GOOD MEETING ETIQUETTE – Come to meetings with an open and collegial attitude, including politeness and respect towards your fellow attendees. Rude or offensive language or behaviour will not be tolerated.
- ISSUE RESOLUTION – Safety is our number one priority, and we have an issue resolution policy to handle complaints in a compassionate and professional manner, and to provide confidentiality, transparency and consistency in our response actions. We want everyone to feel comfortable to report any inappropriate behaviour that they see or experience. If you feel comfortable, speak directly with the person(s) first and try to resolve the issue. If you do not feel comfortable, please speak to the President or a trusted Board Member for support.
To report inappropriate behaviour you can:
