Macquarie Graduate Research Union
MGRU is an independent student union representing graduate research students at Macquarie University. We provide representation, advocacy, and peer support.
Who are we?
The MGRU advocates for the rights, support structures, and personal stability of Higher Degree Research (HDR) students and their respective programs. We are dedicated to peer structural advocacy at Macquarie University, including, but not limited to, representation of HDR interests in appropriate committees, financial advocacy, crisis management, and transparency of policy and management.

Get involved
Why should you join?
We are fabulous company and get shit done. Come and lend a hand.
There are three different levels of involvement available:
- Join the mailing list – stay up to date with the pressing issues and any new peer advice. We will only email you occasionally and only when it’s really important
- Make your voice heard – get more involved by coming along to regular campaign meetings
- Help with a campaign – take on tasks as your time and energy permits
Indicate the level of involvement you would like to take on in the membership form below.
What we “do”
In the past we have provided support for students in the following ways:
- Accompanied students who wanted a support person in meetings
- Helped students access and negotiate entitlements
- Provided peer support as people outside your department who can listen to your concerns confidentially
- Helped students organise in their own cohort and networks to address issues specific to them
For those who are in need of individual support or advocacy and would like to find out how we can help, complete the “Submit a Problem” form
